Ever wonder why they call it Zacatecas, Zacatecas? Or why it’s Guanajuato, Guanajuato?

Thomas Pynchon’s hotel

(March 9, 1963)  Hotel Central (Rm. 32) Ave. Juares 111, Guanajuato, GTO, Mexico

In 1963, when Time magazine sent a photographer to Mexico City to find Pynchon, legend has it that he jumped out the window of his apartment and fled into the mountains [Guanajuato] to escape.

  1. hi, I think I can give you a clue, in Mexico the political division usually stands for the state (like Texas) and the capital (Dallas), It´s just that many places have the same name for the state (Guanajuato) and the city. So you have Guanajuato, the whole state (6 million people) and the city Guanajuato, who is part of the state Guanajuato but it´s just like 200 K habitants and happens to be the capital city
