Tom Pynchon’s Manhattan Beach Neighborhood

Manhattan  Beach and Hermosa Beach have a few  locations that Tom Pynchon, no doubt, frequented.  After all he lived there for about 10 years or so…

Pynchon was alleged to be a customer at Either/Or Bookstore.  The bookstore is no longer there, but memories of Pynchon linger.   According to Peter Pott, former manager of the now-closed Either/Or Bookstore in Hermosa Beach, Pynchon was a frequent visitor to the store around 1970 and 1971.

Pynchon spent a lot of time at the Fractured Cow, a Manhattan Beach local hang out.  Today The Fractured Cow is Beach Pizza.  The building is still the same and is located just a short walk from Pynchon’s 217 33rd rental house.

Juicy James was a hot dog stand in Hermosa Beach.  Most likely, Pynchon had a few Juicy James hot dogs.  The stand is no longer there, but the memory of Pynchon at Juicy James is found in his novel Inherent Vice.

Doc, a gumsandal private eye, must have frequented Greeko’s Sandals, the oldest operating head shop in California. Since 1966 Greeko’s Sandals has sold everything from tie-die & rock band T-shirts, shoes & sandals, incense, candles, to colorful pipes and water pipes.
